Last Cup of Coffee

Today is the day that I start unpacking in earnest and prepare to get to work in 'studio cubby hole'. Maybe I should call my studio 'the coffee cup' because of it's size! I don't know why - or why this move - but this move has given me a greater appreciation for art. A work of art is a spot to rest your eyes on and refresh you as you go about the business of the day.

This is a 12x12 painting that I did a few years ago. The colors here are the same ones I am thinking about using for my large sofa painting. The coffee colors would dominate - but I want many other colors as well. For example the purple mountains in the background.

Last night around midnight we FINALLY completed our move. As Harvey bought the last items up the elevator and down the long, long hallway to our new apartment we constantly heard the question 'are you STILL moving!?!' This will never happen again! If we ever have to move from this lovely spot I will cut down more of my boxes and boxes and boxes of 'must have possessions' (or maybe not)!!!

I did this drawing some time ago but it is so appropriate for today. Moving made my hair stand straight and - I needed several cups of refreshing 'I finally finished moving' coffee.

If you recall, I mentioned that I wanted some color in my coffee color world . . . brown furniture, beige carpets. I came across a 12x12 painting I did some time ago that I think would be magnificent to reproduce as 'choice#1' for that large sofa painting. When I find a pencil and a piece of paper, I will draw a thumbnail sketch. Look for it soon! Remember - I have three canvases to get it right. The adventure awaits! This is the last of the ballerinas that I was working on before I had to - as they say on America's Next Top Model - 'pack your bags and go'. I call this painting 'change' because this little ballerina (me) is gearing up for the adventurous work ahead!

Change. I was telling that fantastic artist 'you know who' that my new studio is only a fourth of the size of my old one. One of my fondest memories was painting in a large 'walk-in closet studio' at a previous apartment. So, I really can't wait to have new art adventures in 'studio cubbyhole'.

Change. Since I had to scale down my possessions a bit I shared some of my art books with an artist friend of mine. Some were old - some were new. Some I bought if there was a painting I wanted to neatly cut out with an exacto knife. I hope that she can find something there to add to her treasure of knowledge.

Change. I told the artist JM that I was sending my dog Tiny to a new home. When the time came I actually felt a little hysterical - and couldn't do it. Even after he tried to chew on JM's friend John and have his toes for a snack. 'Just make it a project to Dog Whisper him' my sister said. 'Okay' I said.

Change. I would like to paint a lovely large painting for my home. Maybe 48x48? I have never done this before. It will not be a ballerina. Maybe a garden scene of a woman drinking coffee - with a little dog by her side? Don't know. The adventure is ahead . . .

Well, I have just undergone the longest 'movement' in the history of moving. We have been 'moving' since I last posted on this blog and we will finally be done tomorrow. Why so long? We moved a three bedroom house - one car load at a time. Why? I don't know. Well actually, we tried to examine everything we owned and give it a 'yea' or a 'nay'. Funny - we took so long to move that when I opened some of the boxes I was like 'what in the world is this?!' and 'why did I bring that?!"

It has been a few weeks since I've done any type of art but I was telling that fantastic artist Janettmarie that it feels as if it has been six months! I will slowly have to get back into the groove of things - when I find my supplies. It's funny how you think about and miss the many artists that you share comments with - even though you may never have the opportunity to meet them in person.

This is another one of the unfinished paintings that I was working on. I believe that I was working on skin tones. Sorry - I didn't get to 'turn out the lights' on that tutu. Could it be more bright? I borrowed the color scheme from one of Degas' paintings of ballerinas. 'See' you soon!!

Right now Harvey and I are looking at apartments. One place was very nice but as I mentioned to the fantastic artist janettmarie 'after so many years I am no longer a fan of the brown sofa, beige wall, beige carpet club'. There is nothing wrong with this color combination - but when I saw this color scheme at a possible new location I began to envision jm's beautiful, colorful cups of coffee adding wonderful colors and textures to my coffee color world! Ahhhhh so refreshing . . . I want three cups of coffee right now!!!! next part 2 - how she encouraged me . . .

Yes. This painting is quite similar to the previous painting. In this one I wanted to try a different size canvas and frame the tutu in a different way. Next I will be posting some sketches and maybe some progress on some unfinished paintings. I won't be able to finish any paintings for a while. Due to a tremendous rent increase Harvey, Tiny and I are packing and preparing to move to a smaller place. This was not unexpected. It was nice while it lasted but as I was telling the wonderful Texas artist Trudy Gomez 'I'm looking forward to less cleaning and more painting!' My only regret is that I did not get to do what I really wanted to do . . . invite some artists over to paint - perhaps with live models . . . prepare some delicious gourmet snacks . . . and complete it with coffee and fancy cupcakes . . . hey . . . to the future . . . right?

I went back to school - so to speak - got out a good old-fashioned note book. I've never drawn a ballerina with an ink pen and then 'painted' it with pastels. . .okay so let's do that! This was actually a fun weekend where Harvey and I ate very good food - but I didn't cook the whole weekend!! It was like being on vacation. Harvey even found this new bakery and bought four LARGE cupcakes. After all of that eating I thought that I had better get some exercise - so I painted this ballerina. I think I lost 'point 1 millionth' of a pound.

Sometimes I wish that I could go back and once again paint with the 'freeness?' 'fearlessness?' that you see in children's artwork. These lovely ladies are from Janettmarie's art class 'Cookies and Canvas'. What a fun name. I wish I could be in this class. Anyway, I found their wonderful artwork inspiring so finally I did decide to revisit some of my artwork as a child. Here I added my figurative artwork to this cupcake painting. I was seventeen when I drew this one. I wish I could have painted a more elegant cupcake here but I am looking forward to painting this composition and theme again.

For my next cupcake painting I was asked to paint an 'elegant' cupcake. I think that I have finally achieved that. Will post soon.

Believe it or not - it was not easy for me to get this far. Oh how I admire those dessert artists who have rich creamy chocolate at the end of their brush. My first two attempts for a more decent cupcake painting were a disaster. With the first painting I thought to myself 'why am I even painting?' With the second painting I asked myself 'will I be defeated by a $2.50 cupcake?' 'Nay!' I said. 'Nay!' (That's how I really talk.) So I mustered up all of my "paintin' a cupcake power" and finally this came out! And now I am tired . . . and now I must rest . . . but first . . .

It's amazing! I redid 'my very first cupcake' in oil. I wanted to paint it in a more impressionist way. I LOVE IT! It's way more cupcakey. I also have several unsuccessful oil canvases that I need to paint over. I really wasn't in the mood to deal with them. It's funny that so far cupcakes put me in the mood to -- cut out some coupons, go to the store, buy some turpentine, buy some oil paint, buy some brushes, cover the terrible canvases and repaint. I will post this 'little wonder' when dry.

THE PAINTING ABOVE is another series I was working on entitled 'a new jar'. As you can see, I actually found a little texture at the end of my brush. Rather than 'ruin' this one I decided that I am going to repaint this composition - but this time put lettering on the jar because I am positive it would look better.

I think the artist Bonnie should buy this book. She should bake each cupcake in this book. She should send me a sample of each of these cupcakes. I will then paint these cupcakes. 'You ate while she dined', my other sister said. Debbie Miller certainly represents 'fine dining' in cupcake art.

I was mentioning to my 'good for the heart art buddy' janettmarie that I was going to try something a little different for the next few paintings. My last ballerina looked a little too stiff - so I drew this one on regular notebook paper and will transfer it to the canvas to see if I can turn this more loose sketch into a more loose painting. (I usually draw directly on the canvas.) I just 'scratched around with a pen' until I drew a basic image that I liked. I have another ballerina painting for comparison . . .so we will see.

I have to say that JM's current series of coffee cups has been the inspiration behind my 'coffee ladies'. I started a new canvas today -inspired by this beautiful floral cup! And now . . . a poem . . .

I have to admit that the engineer turned modern, expressive, impressionist artist Janettmarie has me painting apples. I think I've done a few nice ones that I will post. At least this one is not a round ball! What's next? Bonnie will have me painting flowers, Dreama will have me painting cats, Mary Sheehan Winn will have me painting cute cozy cottages and on and on and on . . .I did manage to do a few figurative works in acrylic - and I even painted a ballerina! Will post next.

I now live in the hot town of Texas. I miss the Art Institute of Chicago. That's where I first saw Cezanne (not this one). It was years ago but his apple painting was so vibrant and alive that I can still see it in my mind. . . and there's a lot of stuff floating around in there!

If you want to learn how to use acrylics there is nothing more fun than painting apples . . . all that red . . . delightful! In the previous post I said that I thought the apple was cute . . . but a little round. In the bottom painting I worked hard to loosen up that brushstroke.

The top painting is the first time I've ever painted a whole cup. What? Gettin' loose? Paintin' cups? What's next?

This is my first acrylic apple painting. It's like me . . . cute but a little too round. I bought a 'standard' box of acrylics with the usual six colors - red, yellow, ultramarine blue and so forth. I don't think I would recommend that for a true acrylic adventure. I would individually buy the colors I like. For instance I would buy phthalo blue rather than ultramarine blue and sap green rather than 'whatever' green and so on. The adventure continues . . .

I was feeling quite anxious while painting this tomato . . . it was close to dinner time and Harvey he does likes his stew. I'm no Lisa Daria (she's so great!) I'm still looking for that expressive acrylic brush stroke. But not with this tomato . . . it was delicious. (Also, I don't think I like the shadow so I might repaint it tomorrow).

I know that I promised you flowers but I was distracted by the above question. I saw this cartoon with these three birds and I thought that the birds were sooooo cute! And if you know me, you know that I did love to do ocean scenes before I 'went all ballerina up in here'.

Yup! I would also like to congratulate CJ on her new art studio!! (Did she hide my YouTube password?) She has encouraged me to appreciate my little space more. Today I think that I will actually clean it up. (Perhaps I will find my password.)
Also, I recently put a cute little easel and chair by my bed. When I do a drawing I can examine it first thing in the morning. Surprisingly it makes me feel a little bit wonderful to wake up and look at what I think is a cute piece of artwork even if it has 'changed' overnight and I see something that I need to fix.
Did you notice - no ballerina today! Tomorrow I will show you a lady sitting in a chair, next to some f lowers drinking coffee!
What's on my easel by the bed now? Do I really have to tell you? When I woke up this morning I said to myself 'this is soooooo cute!' NOW WHAT IS MY YOUTUBE PASSWORD?
